The Marlboro, New Hampshire Depot Mystery

In a nutshell....

Back in 1988 I hiked the abandoned railroad from Keene, N.H. to Elmwood, (aka "Hancock Junction), N.H., over the course of four Sundays. When I passed by the spot where the Marlboro Depot would have been, I saw a building that looked mighty suspicious. It looked like a depot to me.

Recently, I told my pal Gary, (of "Railroad Stations in New Hampshire" fame), about the building.. And now he is just back from a pilgrimage to the site. He has some photos of it. We have spent quite some time e-mailing back and forth trying to figure out if in fact this is the former depot at Marlboro, N.H. At this point we think it is.

But we need your help. Can anyone tell us- is this the former railroad station at Marlboro, N.H.?

Please e-mail either me or Gary with any info you might have.

Here is the Marlboro NH depot back in it's heyday. Look closely- there are lots of clues here. (It stood just east of the former trestle- right where the structure Gary has photographed now stands.) This view is looking from the Northeast.

Here is the building in question. "Trackside" view. The view is from the ROW, looking southwest. (Same vantage as the first image, more or less.) The building is on the south side of the ROW.

Here is the other side. Sure looks like a depot, doesn't it?

Here is Gary's current pic superimposed onto the old one. Pretty convincing, isn't it? We think the shed dormer was added at a later date, replacing the order board. The weird thing is this edifice is LOWER than the current ROW. But...

The trestle to the west collapsed once upon a time. (The old wooden trestle is there to this day, down below the abutments. Look down and you'll see it strewn about in the swamp!) It was replaced with a steel one. When they did this- was it necessary to raise the ROW approach to the trestle- and thus the lowering of the building?

Any info you can provide us would be greatly appreciated!
