While exploring a possible still-standing railroad depot at West Townsend, Mass , I drove down Rte 119 west, from Rte 495. I decided to stop at the other existing depots I am aware of along the way.
First was the former Boston & Maine Freight Depot at Groton, Massachusetts. A beautiful edifice if ever I saw one.
Although the passenger station is long gone, this beautiful freight station, circa 1873, still survives. Today it houses a private bus company, and it seems a rail-trail passes the station.

Moving west, the next stop is Townsend Harbor.

But I am sure that Townsend Harbor Depot was torn down long ago, so I didn't even stop.
I did however, stop at the next station site, Townsend Center. There are actually two surviving railroad depots here. Traveling west, the first of the two is the former B&M freighthouse:

This building was constructed around 1848. Originally it was a combination depot, meaning it served both passenger and freight under one roof. Then around 1882 a new station was built just to the west, where the tracks crossed Rte 13. The new station was for passengers only, and this old one became freight only.
(Boy, this local treasure is looking rather down in the tooth. Don't they have a historical society in Townsend? Why haven't they bought this amazing structure and restored it? What gives?)
Moving west, we next come to the former Passenger Station.

Today the passenger station, modified with additions, serves the NAPA auto parts store in town. (Tell me this isn't one of the nicest auto parts stores in the state? This is where you ought to be buying your spark plugs.)

I love the way you can see both the passenger and freight depots in a couple of those shots. And say, is it just me, or is that platform a later addition, not for railroad passengers, but for something that came later- perhaps a used car dealership?
Here are some vintage images, from Gary Lapointe's site.
